common consensus seems to be that Heraclitus didn’t have a theory of flux after all. motion is what makes a river a river, but the river remains the same, only the waters change. so he did not, in fact, say “you can’t walk through the same river twice” but instead “On those stepping into rivers staying the same other and other waters flow.”

all of my understandings of this man and love of his ideas were based on a lie. —another philosopher’s philosophy, projected onto his subject, then misinterpreted
