666 and cultural identity

What if our cultural reference points are wrong? How long would it take to correct something that has been ingrained in our culture for lifetimes? Is it even worth bothering?

The Number of the Beast: (from Wikipedia) “The Number of the Beast is a concept from the Book of Revelation of the New Testament of the Bible. The Number is 666 in modern biblical text, although 616 and 665 appear instead in at least one ancient source.”

another article from 2005: “Elijah Dann, a professor of philosophy and religion at the University of Toronto, said the new number is unlikely to make a dent in the popularity of 666. ‘Otherwise, a lot of sermons would have to be changed and a lot of movies rewritten,’ he said with a laugh.”

art above truth? (or only in the case when truth is still in doubt?)
