  • onomastics or onomatology: the study of proper names and the origins of names; from the Greek ónoma (name) [please please do not confuse onomastics with onamism]
    • anthroponomastics or anthroponymy: the study of the names of people
    • toponymy: the study of the origins and meanings of place names
  • etymology: the study of the history of words
  • philology: the study of the form and meaning of a linguistic expression, how words change over time and between culture; from the Greek philos (loved, beloved, dear, friend) and logos (word, articulation, reason)
  • linguistic typology: the study and classifications of languages according to their structural features
