the end is near

Religious type on the corner today: “Oh Jesus Christ. Oh Jesus, our lord, thank you for dying on the cross for our sins two thousand and ten years ago.”

Now I know it’s a little confusing because of the there-was-no-year-zero thing, and because we don’t really know how old Jesus was when he died, and because monks actually calculated back to the “beginning” of A.D. many years after the beginning so they likely got it wrong… etc. But, so why be so specific? Why not something like “Many many many years ago a most-likely innocent man was supposedly killed, possibly for our sins.” What, too equivocal?
