difficult friend

me: What’s the other band playing tonight?
him: I think they’re called “Wenders.” [sounded like “winders” rhymes with “cinders” to me]
me: Are you sure it’s not “Winders”? [rhymes with “binders”]
him: No, it’s Wenders — W-E-N-D.
me: Oh. [pause] Are you sure it’s not Venders, like the German?
him: [inaudible sigh, I’m assuming] No. I don’t know.
me: Like Wim Wenders… you know he directed that movie… you know… about the angels. One of them wants to become human. [I honestly forgot I was also describing City of Angels.]
him: The one with Nicholas Cage?
me: Oh. [realization] No. The original one. Never mind.
[Then we both sit in silence with a Goo Goo Dolls song in our heads. Luckily for me, I like that song.]

Lessons learned:
1. I always doubt my friends’ pronunciations, apparently just to be difficult.
2. I always forget movie titles and never give adequate descriptions but still manage to sound pretentious.
3. I always get songs my friends don’t like stuck in their heads.

yes, i’m the difficult friend.
